Day 12: San Jose, California to Salt Lake City, Utah

768 miles today. Big day. We felt like we needed to make it so since we are expected in Philadelphia on Friday. That will be a push, for sure. But, we'll endeavor to make it happen as Greg can only do so much preparation for his game from the road.

The landscape we covered today was spectacular -- changing from urban to suburban cookie cutter malls to mountainous to high desert to salt flats to breath-taking mountains, again. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves and that's not just because I'm exhausted.

If you notice a theme of smokiness in all of these pics, that's the way it is when the West Coast is on fire. You get used to the smell and it fades with the air conditioning on recycled. But, when. you stop and get  the full brunt of it, it's surprising. Sad situation here. So many lives uprooted.

Weird statue(?) sprouting out of the Utah desert.

We got to Salt Lake City just as the sun was sinking. Whew!
Tomorrow we head East, hoping to get well into Colorado.

Day 11: San Jose

Game day! Greg left early to head to the Niners facility in Santa Clara. We had been on pins and needles because there was a chance that the poor air quality (from the fires) would necessitate the game being relocated. Dallas, Texas was a possibility, and that would've been a huge problem for us -- with Greg having to fly and me having to drive the rental on the two day journey by myself. Thankfully, the weather cooperated and the game was able to be played.

Here's another shot from the neighborhood around the hotel.

And a couple of shots from the Greg's momentous first day. Almost everything went wrong technically but from where I sat watching the game on TV it looked fine! Great that the game was exciting and looked really good as a viewer, even though it was a bit challenging on the production end. Tomorrow we start the journey to Philadelphia.

On the field: NFL Week 1, 9/13/20: Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers

The game was almost moved to Dallas or Phoenix because of health concerns over the air quality from the raging fires. With only a few parts per million to spare, the teams were allowed to play. Arizona QB Kyler Murray shocked the 49ers with his speed and accuracy. Final score: AZ 24 SF 20.

Day 10: San Jose, California

Greg was working pretty much all day. I spent most of the day on a writing project, but was able to fit in a walk around the neighborhood in the afternoon. While the streets were mostly empty, a few masked souls braved the unhealthy air quality (AirNow.gov score 170 which is in the very unhealthy zone for strenuous activity) and the heat (87 degrees). I had a nice stroll. There was a little breeze and the smoke seemed less intense than yesterday. I discovered that our hotel is right next to a museum which may explain the many beautiful pieces of public art.

Here are some that caught my eye. Please forgive the substandard photography. My phone is pretty old and the camera is not up to the quality you're used to from Greg's phone.

After the walk, I took a bit of time to do a sort of photo essay which, for lack of a more inspired title, I'm calling . . .

"Hotel during pandemic"

And, last, a self-portrait with a poor camera and poorer photography skills. No map today as we are still in San Jose through the game tomorrow.

Day 9: San Jose

Smoky air, empty streets, uncertainty -- that's the view from here. A bright spot: Greg got his first Covid test and reports that it wasn't so bad. The Covid unit, consisting of two nurses and a covid manager, are making sure the essential workers who bring you football stay healthy.

Below, Greg and analyst Chris Spielman check out Levi's Stadium.

Greg was able to fit a small break in from his preparations so we could drive to Santa Cruz to visit his dad, Jim, who recently returned to his home after being evacuated because of fire danger. It was so great for them to be together, along with Greg's sister Dina and Jim's wife Sherry, even though we needed to social distance (except during the few short moments when these pictures were taken). Because of Greg's work schedule we kept the visit short.

Day 8: Lake Tahoe, California to San Jose, California

Sunrise shot from the motel window. The lake is just visible behind the pines.

We started our travel day with a short hike to spectacular views. Even in pristine Lake Tahoe the smoke from the fires ravaging California left their mark. Views were hazy, there was a smoky smell and, when we came back down from the hike to Eagle Rock, ash particles were visible on our silver rental car. Driving through an area with spectacular mountain views, hazy smoke was everywhere.

The drive though the East Bay en route to San Jose was sepia-toned by smoke and haze.

The "mothball fleet" near Benicia, Ca. was a collection of dozens of retired Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine vessels, originally docked to provide spare parts and be put into service if needed. At its peak it had 340 ships. Now only a few remain. Environmentalists demanded the removal of the ships as many of them were leaking toxins into the bay.

Greg's family used to vacation at Lake Tahoe when he was a boy, so we stopped by the Nut Tree, which had been their traditional stopping place on the way. It's changed quite a bit, but we were able to get a delicious chocolate milkshake from Fenton's Creamery and to snap some pictures of the places he remembered, albeit changed by time and Covid restrictions.

Our journey across the country has provided many surprising moments, but neither of us expected to see a downtown San Jose so transformed by Covid and the impact of the fires. It's like being in a ghost town. The Fairmount Hotel, where we're staying, is nearly empty. Our temperatures were taken and hand sanitizer applied before we borrowed a luggage cart to fetch our things. The elevator whisked us up efficiently (the sanitizer dispenser on the elevator wall the only visible change) but when we got out on the 10th floor there was no one in sight, long empty hallways and no sound from any room.

The view from our room is still nice, but the streets -- even from this height -- look eerily empty.

When we got to our room, we started our normal procedure -- spraying every surface with disinfectant, wiping every doorknob, light switch, faucet and toilet handle. We strip the bed of its cover and use our own blankets and pillows.

Before picking up some take-out food for a late dinner in the room, we took a drive to the neighborhood Greg grew up in. His elementary school was much changed, but recognizable.

The house below was 2 houses down from Greg's boyhood home. It's in pretty bad shape, as you can see, but when we checked it out online we discovered that the selling price is $1.2 million. Go figure.

Here's our progress on the map. We drove across the country -- from Vermont to California -- in seven days. Whew! We're here in San Jose for the next few days and, as of now, the Niner game is expected to go on as scheduled. But, with concerns about air quality . . . who knows.

Day 126: Kansas City, Missouri to Akron, Ohio; Day 127: Akron to Middlesex, Vermont -- We're home!

Well, it does not seem possible, but we have been home one month now. Sorry for the long delay in getting this post written. Reentry tasks (...
