Day 4: North Platte, Nebraska to Rock Springs, Wyoming

Turns out Nebraska is flat, flat, flat. Again, the trucks were our only companions in 475 miles of travel.

We wedged in a couple of detours today. The Ames Monument was built to honor the railroad workers who connected the country by building the transcontinental railroad. Its shape was meant to echo the natural rock formations that dot the craggy, desolate landscape.

Fort Fred Steele gave us a taste of life in the early part of last century. My takeaway: it was damn hard. As we strolled the ruins in 98 degree heat a locomotive fittingly rumbled across the bridge overhead.

Here's what we covered on the map. The pink shows today's progress.

As evening fell in Rock Springs, Wyoming a stiff, warm wind blew. Tomorrow on to Utah.
